The Almenni pension fund is open to those who can choose a pension fund, but it is also a professional fund for five professions: architects, guides, doctors, engineers, and musicians. Almost half of the mandatory contribution, or 7 out of 15.5%, goes to Almenni's hereditary private property.

Birta Pension Fund (Birta lífeyrissjóður) is open to all not having compulsory membership in another pension fund.
The fund is a traditional occupational fund, where members of specified occupations have compulsory membership.
Brú Pension Fund (Brú lífeyrissjóður) of municipal employees is for people working for municipalities and are members of the Association of Academics (BHM), the Federation of State and Municipal Employees (BSRB), and the Icelandic Teachers' Union (KÍ). The fund has three mutual insurance divisions, Division A, Division B and Division V (open to all). The Reykjavik Employees’ Pension Fund (Lífeyrissjóður starfsmanna Reykjavíkurborgar) merged over to Brú Pension Fund in the year 2024.
EFÍA is the pension fund of the Icelandic Air Line Pilots Association (IALP). The fund is open to all members of IALP. Arion Bank's Asset Management sees to the operations and asset management of the pension fund.
Festa Pension Fund came out of the merger of the pension funds of Sudurnes, South Iceland, and West Iceland. The region of the Festa Pension Fund’s operations is West Iceland, South Iceland, and Sudurnes. The fund is open to general wage earners and self-employed individuals who live in the fund’s region of operations.
The Free Pension Fund (Frjálsi lífeyrissjóðurinn) suits those who can choose which pension fund they pay premiums into and those who build up supplemental pension savings. Gildi is Iceland's third biggest pension fund. The fund operates both a statutory mutual insurance
division and a private savings department. Gildi resulted from the merger of Framsýn Pension Fund and Fishermen's Pension Fund and later merged with West Fjorders' Gildi Pension Fund. Eleven unions belong to the fund. However, everyone may pay into it.

Bank Employees' Pension Fund is one of the oldest operating pension funds in the country. It was founded in 1929. The members of the fund are Landsbanki, the Central Bank of Iceland, Banks' Data Centre, the Confederation of Icelandic Bank and Finance Employees, and Valitor. The fund operates two divisions, the Proportional Division and the Age Division.
The Farmers' Pension Fund began operations on 1 January 1971. The fund is open to all members and is also the occupational fund for all farmers and their spouses running farms.
The Pension Fund of Rangá District Residents is a mutual insurance fund, founded 12 January 1971. The members of the fund are all employees of Akureyri Town and its institutions who were hired before 1 January 1999, the date when the fund was closed. Stapi Pension Fund sees to the operation of the Pension Fund of Employees of Akureyri Town, in accordance with an agreement between the funds involved.
The members of the Agricultural Bank of Iceland’s Employees’ Pension Fund are the employees of the Agricultural Bank of Iceland. The fund is a proportional fund and stopped accepting new members in 1998.
